FIBROIDS

At Rancho OB/GYN, our gynecologists tailor everything to you and your specific symptoms. Fibroids occur in about 70% of women and are often undiagnosed because they don’t always cause symptoms. The best way to specifically diagnose fibroids is with an ultrasound. At Rancho OB/GYN, our goal is to better your health by tailoring a treatment plan to your individualized concerns and symptoms. Fibroids are not cancer so they do not need to be treated if they are not causing you a lot of bothersome symptoms. There are many different treatment options for fibroids and they range from observation (watching and not treating them) to medication or surgery.

I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH FIBROIDS, WHAT ARE THEY?

Fibroids, also known as leiomyomas, are overgrowths of muscle and scar tissue that occur in the different layers of the uterus. They are abnormal growths in the muscle of the uterus, but are not cancer.

They are typically slow growing and can range in size. Sometimes, they can be as small as a pea (a fraction of an inch), but sometimes they grow to the size of a small melon (multiple inches in diameter).

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF FIBROIDS?

Not every woman with fibroids has symptoms. In fact, most women live their whole life without knowing they have fibroids. When symptoms do exist, they include:

At Rancho OB/GYN, we are trained in treating uterine fibroids.
If you have symptoms that you think are related to uterine fibroids, please call Rancho OBGyn’s office to schedule an appointment with a gynecologist because better health starts here!

HOW DOES RANCHO OBGYN DIAGNOSE FIBROIDS?

At Rancho OB/GYN, our gynecologists tailor everything to you and your specific symptoms.

The best way to specifically diagnose fibroids is with an ultrasound.

Our providers will also order additional tests to rule out other causes of your symptoms.

For instance, if your main symptoms have to do with urination, our gynecologists will assess for a urine infection and perform a swab to check for sexually transmitted infections (STDs) as these conditions can all cause similar symptoms.

If you have symptoms of anemia, our providers will order a complete blood count to check your blood levels.

If you experience irregular menstrual bleeding or bleeding between your menses, our gynecologists will check your hormone levels. Our providers may also recommend performing a biopsy of the inside of the uterus to rule out cancer as the cause of the abnormal bleeding pattern.

I WAS ORDERED AN ULTRASOUND OF MY UTERUS, WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

woman abdomen ultrasound

If you were ordered an ultrasound to look for fibroids in your uterus, then you will need to call the radiology office provided on the order to schedule the ultrasound.

An ultrasound uses sound waves to create an image. To look inside the uterus, the ultrasound probe may be placed on the abdomen (transabdominal) or within the vagina (transvaginal).

Typically, both are done as the vaginal images are often more detailed and they allow our gynecologists to not only see the fibroids, but also determine which layer of the uterus in which they are located and measure their size.

DO I NEED TO WORRY IF I HAVE FIBROIDS?

Thankfully, fibroids are not usually dangerous. Fibroids are not cancer so they do not need to be treated if they are not causing you a lot of bothersome symptoms.

Fibroids can become dangerous when they cause you to bleed a lot. This is because heavy or prolonged bleeding can cause you to become weak, lightheaded, dizzy, or even pass out from severe anemia.

Sometimes, the bleeding can be so severe that you might need to go to the emergency room for a blood transfusion!

If you are experiencing heavy or prolonged bleeding with your periods, please call Rancho OB/GYN so that we can help you regain your health!

CAN I STILL GET PREGNANT IF I HAVE FIBROIDS?

It depends on where they are located.

If you are struggling with getting pregnant and have been diagnosed with fibroids, please call Rancho OB/GYN to schedule an appointment to discuss this further with one of our gynecologists today!
