GESTATIONAL DIABETES

I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH GESTATIONAL DIABETES. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

Gestational diabetes is elevated blood sugar (glucose) that develops during pregnancy.  It is one of the most common health issues that can occur during pregnancy.

SHOULD I BE WORRIED IF I HAVE GESTATIONAL DIABETES?

Diabetes in pregnancy can occur at any time in pregnancy, although it is more likely to occur the further along in pregnancy you are. At Rancho OB/GYN, our obstetricians take gestational diabetes very seriously and are experts in both diagnosing and treating it.

Our providers check every woman for diabetes in pregnancy in the late second or early third trimester. Most mothers who develop gestational diabetes deliver healthy babies. However, it is vitally important to get early prenatal screening and regular prenatal care.

If our obstetricians think you are at high risk for developing diabetes in pregnancy, they will test you for it at your first prenatal appointment as well.

WHY DID I DEVELOP DIABETES DURING MY PREGNANCY?

There are certain risk factors that increase the likelihood a woman will develop diabetes in pregnancy. These include:

blood test sugar
  • Too much weight gain in pregnancy
  • Being above her ideal weight at the start of pregnancy
  • Having a family history of diabetes
  • Being prediabetic prior to pregnancy
  • Having a history of gestational diabetes in prior pregnancies
  • Delivering a prior baby over 4000g (8lbs 8 oz)

IS DIABETES DURING PREGNANCY SERIOUS?

Diabetes during pregnancy is a serious condition that can affect both your health and your baby’s health in the pregnancy.

Having regular prenatal check-ups and getting your diabetes screen done is very important to prevent this from happening.

If you have not yet been screened for gestational diabetes and live in the Murrieta or Temecula, CA area, make an appointment with our Rancho OBGyn office as soon as possible because better health starts here!

IS MY BABY’S HEALTH IN DANGER IF I HAVE GESTATIONAL DIABETES?

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes during your pregnancy, your baby is at higher risk for multiple problems during your pregnancy if you do not maintain control of your blood sugar levels.

Our obstetricians at Rancho OBGyn work closely with dieticians trained specifically in gestational diabetes and high risk providers who monitor your baby’s growth and development.

WILL I HAVE LONG TERM HEALTH PROBLEMS BECAUSE I DEVELOPED DIABETES DURING MY PREGNANCY?

Although it typically disappears once the baby is born, having diabetes in pregnancy puts you at risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.

This is why it is very important to have a provider you trust so that they can continue to work with you after pregnancy to prevent type 2 diabetes from occurring or help you diagnose your diabetes if you remain a diabetic after delivery.
