GESTATIONAL HYPERTENSION

IS MY BABY IN DANGER IF I HAVE GESTATIONAL HYPERTENSION?

If you have high blood pressure or preeclampsia during your pregnancy, your baby is at higher risk for multiple problems during your pregnancy if you are not closely monitored by your doctor.

Most of these risks occur when the high blood pressure in pregnancy goes undiagnosed because it prevents your baby from getting the oxygen and nutrition your baby needs by hindering blood flow to the placenta.

At Rancho OB/GYN, our obstetricians are experts in gestational hypertension and preeclampsia.

WHY DID I DEVELOP HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE DURING MY PREGNANCY?

All women who are pregnant have a risk of developing high blood pressure in pregnancy.

However, some women are more at risk of developing high blood pressure in pregnancy than others. Some of these risk factors include:

  • Too much weight gain in pregnancy
  • Being above your ideal weight at the start of pregnancy
  • Having gestational diabetes
  • Having a history of high blood pressure or preeclampsia in prior pregnancies
  • Age >35 years old
  • Certain pre-existing medical conditions such as prediabetes, kidney disease, or autoimmune conditions like lupus

At Rancho OBGyn, our obstetricians are experts in managing high blood pressure in pregnancy.

Our providers screen all of our women at their first prenatal visit for these and other risk factors that increase the likelihood they will develop high blood pressure in pregnancy.

This allows our obstetricians to educate our high risk patients on ways they can help prevent high blood pressure from developing in pregnancy in addition to monitoring all of our pregnant women for signs and symptoms of preeclampsia at every prenatal visit.

IS HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE DURING PREGNANCY SERIOUS?

Yes. Having high blood pressure puts a strain on your organs (kidneys, brain, eyes, among others).

Although most women do not feel symptoms of hypertension, if the high blood pressure in pregnancy is not diagnosed and monitored, it can cause organ damage. This is called preeclampsia.

I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH PREECLAMPSIA, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

Yes. Having high blood pressure puts a strain on your organs (kidneys, brain, eyes, among others).

Although most women do not feel symptoms of hypertension, if the high blood pressure in pregnancy is not diagnosed and monitored, it can cause organ damage. This is called preeclampsia.

IS PREECLAMPSIA DURING PREGNANCY SERIOUS?

Preeclampsia during pregnancy puts you at high risk of complications for you and your baby.

This is why it is important to have regular prenatal visits with an obstetrician you trust. If you have not yet received prenatal care and live in the Murrieta or Temecula, CA area, make an appointment with our Rancho OB/GYN office as soon as possible because better health starts here!

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF PREECLAMPSIA?

The symptoms of preeclampsia depend on which organs are damaged from the high blood pressure in pregnancy. These can include:

  • Increased amounts of protein in your urine from kidney damage
  • Headaches
  • Persistent spots in your vision or blurry vision
  • Right sided upper abdominal pain that is not due to baby kicking
  • Excessive swelling in your hands (you can no longer wear rings) or your face
  • Chest pain
  • Stroke
  • Seizures
  • Coma
  • Death
